Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Goals for 2025

 

First off.....I am wondering if I can get one of my three cats to pose like this? Lol....but seriously I love this Top Ten Tuesday post each year. Looking back I don't necessarily do well with these goals but I try! 

So here again in January are my bookish goals I hope to accomplish this year and I am excited to see how many I have in common with my fellow readers and bloggers. They are in no particular ranking order, just my thoughts. Thanks to Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl for hosting this each week. Happy reading ya'll!

1. Read more history- I say this every year....I used to be such a straight up reader of history books. But darn if my fellow bloggers didn't get me hooked on historical fiction and now there are so many wonderful books out there I'm finding it impossible to read a dry history book.

2. DNF books after page 50- If I have devoted this much time and energy I need to stop. I'm 50 years old and have only so much time in life left to read...lol.

3. Stop starting so many series- This will be sooooo difficult for me. I love series books but I have to be choosy because I can't possibly read all the books in every series I come across.

4. Spend more time reading and commenting on others' blogs- I absolutely love reading book blogs but often get absorbed in them and forget to comment too. I need to work on this!

5. Whittle down my TBR pile- I know we all have this goal. Enough said. Pick a book and finish it each month is a good start!

6. Give a chance to some new authors- Another goal I always have. I truly want to do this but it's hard when I need a good book from a trusted author I know won't disappoint me and waste my time.

7. Finish my actual paper books- I don't have many as at my age and with my eyesight getting worse each year I'm an avid Kindle user. But I have some great paper books you can't get on Kindle so I want to try to start them this year.

8. Post more consistently- I do post weekly and often more than once. But I don't want just reviews. There are so many fun weekly post ideas and challenges I want to get more involved with. It is just lack of time that causes me to have whole weeks where I don't post with intention.

9. Devote more time in my week to actually reading- This is another goal I'm sure I share with my fellow bloggers and readers.....spending a lot of time looking at new books but not enough time actually reading them. It's just so relaxing to scroll and dream :) 

10. Work on collections- Lately I've been wanting to scour more bookstores for books that are worth keeping in physical form. I'd love to own all of Jean Plaidy's works as they are hard to find and many other authors I've grown up loving. Just for fun. Just because.

Just taking a moment to say thank you to anyone who read my blog, posted a comment, or suggestion, or got new inspiration for new books from it. 

My blog turns 3 today and I still love reading, reviewing, and posting each week. I also love that I am promoting authors new and old in some small way. I am in awe of those who write books and all the hard work that goes into it.

The book blog community is so wonderful and I can't think of a better hobby for me to be a part of.

Noteworthy News #6: Hourly History

I am always looking for ways to learn more history but just don't have the time or will  right now to read dense books. This week I discovered Hourly History and I'm excited to share with other history lovers! It's a series of books that are designed to be read in one hour (hence the name) about all kinds of historical topics. Everything from Ancient Rome to the Norman Conquest to present day biographies of the Presidents and Princess Diana. There is something for everyone and it gives a great, no nonsense overview of the topic while giving enough detail that you come away feeling like you know the basics. 

They also have a great blog with lots of resources at hourlyhistory.com You can sign up to receive free books and even if you buy them they are on average $2.99 each. Kindle Unlimited has most of them to read for free. It's just a wonderful way to become more knowledgeable about so many topics. 

My problem now is to zero in on the ones I really like and read them first. It is hard to choose once you start looking through them. If you love history you will be hooked! Happy Reading this week :) 

Why I Now Love Audiobooks and Can't Live Without Them

I haven't done much in the world of opinion posts the last two years. I think I focused more on challenges and reviews. I went back recently and re-read some of my opinion posts though and decided to write a new one about audiobooks. In 2022 I wrote one on Why I Dislike Audiobooks. Boy has life changed! Now I absolutely LOVE them! I still stand by my belief that reading is a harder skill than listening but have really changed my tune about audiobooks being worth my time. So here is my follow up opinion post listing five reasons I have grown to love them.

1. Time Savers- Life can get pretty crazy. I am a stickler for cleaning my house often and I'd love to be able to do that and also sit down and read every day. But there just isn't enough time to always do that. I have found audiobooks let me do both and that makes me happy. I get so much accomplished while listening to a great story. I absolutely love podcasts but sometimes I want to get into a book too.

2. Easier to find- I have found many audiobooks that I can't get in written form. Sometimes this is especially true with books from the UK. On Libby and Hoopla it seems like I find more audiobooks (Agatha Christie is one author) and so I go with them because I just don't want to wait or pay for the actual Kindle book. I end up enjoying it either way!

3. Interesting narration- I used to feel completely the opposite for this one. I have come to tolerate and now even enjoy the narration in audiobooks. It took awhile to get there as I found it kind of cheesy in the beginning. But now I appreciate the inflection in the narrator's voice and changes in the pacing. It makes the story fun if you just go with it.

4. Car Rides-  I never considered how much time I'd spend in the car as my teens became little mini adults with their crazy schedules of activities. Thank goodness  both of my boys drive as of this year but these last two years got me into audiobooks because I was in the car driving more than ever before. 

5. Escapism- This sounds worse than I mean it but.....sometimes it's nice to just put in my Air Pods and be left alone to immerse myself in a good story. My husband and boys are great readers...they just don't read. Ugh, drives me crazy! But they often don't appreciate how I can be reading and into a story and don't want to be interrupted. You know how this is fellow book lovers.

People think because you aren't talking you aren't doing anything. When I'm listening to a book they are more likely to leave me in peace. 

So that is why I've changed my mind about audiobooks. I can admit when I'm wrong and grow....lol.....do you love audiobooks? Or do you prefer to read only? 

Top Ten Tuesday: December Freebie- Books I Didn't Get To This Year (but wished I had)

 

This week's Top Ten Tuesday hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl is a December freebie topic. I decided to list books I wished I'd read but hadn't gotten to this year. It is possible I will get to some of them before January 1st but not likely. December is crazy when you are a teacher and a mother and I already have several books ahead of these now that I want to finish.  I think this is why I love blogging and reading others' blogs. We all have enormous piles of books we can't possibly finish. And that makes me feel semi-normal, lol. Happy Reading everyone...here's to new goals for 2025.

Noteworthy News #5: Royals, Rebels, and Romantics: From Wars of the Roses to Jane Austen meets Agatha Christie

Yesterday I was tuning into Apple podcasts and a new one appeared that I hadn't seen before.  It is called Royals, Rebels, and Romantics. It is all British history hosted by a historian from America named Carol Ann Lloyd. She travels the world speaking on a range of British history topics and is especially knowledgeable about royalty and Shakespeare. 

So far scrolling past episodes (going back to 2020) it seems like she has a huge bank of topics that also include Jane Austen as well as walk throughs of castles, cathedrals, and discussing plays and playwrights. All of which she relates to British history and often royal Brits. 

Some of the topics are things I know a lot about like the causes of the Wars of the Roses so I might not listen in order. But others look really unique. For example, one is titled, "Murder, Mystery, and Jane Austen" and she focuses on Austen's novels and how she might interact with Agatha Christie in a novel. This would be the "romantic" part of the podcast, not focusing on royalty.

There are so many to choose from and each is about 20-40 minutes so easily listened to in the car. I have said before this is why I love these podcasts because it's not an entire audiobook but you still come away learning a lot and being greatly entertained. This particular host also has a blog and such an interesting background with research so she really knows her stuff.

Noteworthy News #1: The Missing Princes Project

 

I have been wanting a place to post things I've come across that might not fall into the book review or book accumulation category. This might be an author I heard on a podcast, a book advertised online that is already out but I haven't read yet, or just an article that covers a topic related to history or books that looked interesting. So this is my first blog entry titled, "Noteworthy News." If I hear or read something noteworthy that I want to share I'll do it here. Likely it will involve history or mysteries as that is what I love the most!

I have been listening to the podcast Gone Medieval with various guests that centers around, of course, all things Medieval. Yesterday's episode was titled, "Princes in the Tower: New Evidence Revealed" and Philippa Langley was interviewed about her years of research and subsequent book on the subject. I was fascinated to learn that she was the driving force behind the search and eventual discovery of Richard III's body and that this set off a desire for her to prove whether or not he was involved in the death of his nephews. Many people think Richard was unfairly targeted by men of his time and by Shakespeare and made into the villain in this story without the goods to back it up. The Tudor version of him as the evil Uncle has stayed with him for centuries. 

In her interview for the podcast she explains how she spent four years just putting together a timeline of events and trying to determine if there was any reason to believe the princes had died in Richard's care. She talked about the enormous amount of research she compiled and how overwhelming it all was to keep track of. Her book, published just today, November 17th, details the hunt for the truth. It is called The Princes in the Tower: Solving History's Greatest Cold Case. She worked with police to find out how they conduct cold case investigations, and spent hours reading archival material related to the story. It was called, "The Missing Princes Project" and is the first attempt to use forensic science to really dig into the facts. 

I found all of this so interesting and informative and while I may not get a chance soon to add this to my TBR pile, the podcast interview summed it up enough to give me an idea of the contents of the book. It is obviously a well researched new theory behind a very old unsolved mystery. There were some unique documents uncovered that I won't give away here but either go listen to the podcast episode or read the book and you will be surprised at what was uncovered. 

 

Top Ten Tuesday: My Ongoing Reading Goals

 

First of all.....how cute is this kitten? But to my goals....I made my top ten list of reading goals for 2023 in January and it was fun to check back in to see how I'm progressing. That is, fun until I realize I'm not meeting a lot of them. But that's okay. My blog is to promote books and the pleasure of reading so I'm not going to stress that I am not doing everything I set out to and make a list with some old and new goals. And as always, thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl, for hosting Top Ten Tuesday each week!

1. Read more history- Well, this has not been my strong suit this year for sure. I have been so incredibly busy with my teenagers, job, home life with hubby, etc. that straight history has taken a backseat to cozy mysteries and authors I am already comfortable with. The last one I reviewed was Josephine, in April and I have read a couple that I didn't review. But this is one area I'd like to work on going forward. 

2. Read more from my Classics Club list- I joined the Classics Club in January and was so excited to create my list. Then when I started choosing books from it, the excitement waned. I don't know if it's just my crazy, busy life right now or if I just don't want to read them but it has been a real struggle. So I'm going to keep trying and maybe revise my list too. If I just can't get going on it then it may be something I decide to drop in 2024. Reading 50 classic books in 5 years is definitely harder than it looks! So far I've read and reviewed 7 of them so that is something to celebrate but not nearly enough to make my end goal.

3. DNF more books- I have gotten so much better at this in 2023. I am still trying to remind myself that life is too short and there are just too many good books out there to keep reading ones I don't like. So this has been something I'm really striving to do.

4. Try new authors- I have tried and enjoyed many new authors this year but still gravitate to my favorites. I have to remind myself that when reviewing books it is good to have a variety of selections or people will get bored with your blog. Then again, it's my blog so I need to read and review what I like, right? Thanks to my blogger friends out there though I've discovered some great new writers so I'm going to keep trying to branch out.

5. Be okay with taking a long to time to finish a book- I have literally been reading Penman's Lionheart for over 6 months. And it's not because it's a struggle or I'm forcing myself. If anything, it's because I love it so much that it is taking me awhile. Sometimes I get frustrated that I can't read it faster but so be it. If an epic novel takes a whole year to read and absorb I'm trying to be okay with that, and just enjoy it.

6. Ditch Net Galley more- This goal might seem strange to my fellow bloggers but here is what I mean.....sometimes I go onto Net Galley and feel pressured to pick something. But often I find I'm just choosing books because they are new. And then requesting them and dreading reading them. I am vowing not to do that anymore. If something looks truly interesting to me, I'll request it. If not, then log out and go find an older book, classic book, or yet another sequel book by an author I love. Trying to read and review all the new, shiny books is stressful!

7. Quit picking books based off the cover- So sometimes this can be fun and rewarding. But often, shiny pretty covers do not equal good books. I just get hooked in by the style and pictures. So I'm going to force myself to really examine the content more. We will see if I'm able to stick to this though :) I'm a sucker for beautiful book covers!

8. Set a daily reading minutes goal and stick to it- I've tried to be casual about my reading and just go with the flow but with life getting in the way I think choosing a daily minutes goal would be good for me. Even if it's just 20 minutes it will keep me on track on the busiest days. While I always want to read, it can sometimes be hard to do much of it when I don't plan to sit down and be quiet and focus.

9. Be okay with having several books going at once- Sometimes I'm good at this but often I feel like reading books piecemeal is somehow "wrong." Then I remember this is okay because forcing yourself to read just one book at a time can be frustrating when your mood is just not into that particular book that day. So I'm going back to reading whatever, whenever, as long as it's a book I'm enjoying.

10. Not care what others think of my reading- This is hard for me. I vacillate between wanting to read deep, thoughtful books and something light and airy. When I was younger,  I thought it was somehow a waste of time to read books that weren't teaching me something. Now as I get older I've discovered you don't have to be so deep all the time. It's probably from growing up with parents who really instilled a love of reading for educational purposes and weren't big fiction readers unless it was a classic book. I love and appreciate them for that but I'm finding with our world so intense these days, cozy books and lighthearted historical fiction is so good for the soul sometimes. So I'm going to enjoy whatever works for me and so should everyone else! 

Top Ten Tuesday: Things Getting in the Way of Reading

This week's Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, is "things getting in the way of reading." Boy do I need this one because it feels like when you are a teacher and a mother there is no way to read in the month of May! This post should really be "what isn't getting in the way of my reading? But for me, June is coming and hopefully a lot of reading time for summer! Here is my list of things sucking up all my reading time right now though. If you identify with some of these let me know....it's nice to know I'm not the only one!

1. School-  When you are a teacher, April is testing month and May is all the things month....field trips, wrapping up the end of the year, etc. I'm tired and out of schedule as the days get a little unpredictable. There is barely time to eat lunch much less take a few minutes to catch up on a chapter or two in my latest book.

2. Baseball- Well this one might as well be labeled year round for my house. My son has been playing since he was 3 and now that he is almost 15 it is serious business. I am gone a lot and that will continue in June but at least I'll have my days free. And always bring that Kindle to the ballpark in case I get time between games!

3. Blogging- Oh the irony....blogging about books often keeps me from actually reading them. Any of my fellow bloggers agree? I absolutely love blogging, reading all my fellow bloggers latest posts, but am realizing all that time could be spent reading the books...it's a real problem.

4. Chores- this one is kind of boring but it's a daily issue. I am a neat freak and I have a really hard time sitting down to read a book when there are dishes in the sink and laundry in a chair. I feel guilty and can't concentrate. I want to ignore it all but it feels impossible. Unless the book is really, really good :)

5. Family time- I do not live in a house full of readers. At all. My boys are very good at school required reading, have never ever struggled in this area but with all the technology in today's world neither they nor my husband ever pick up a book. It kinda makes me sad....but they don't identify with me in this area. So they aren't exactly understanding that I might want to skip togetherness sometimes to see how my chapter ends.

6. Technology- This is one I'm trying so hard to work on! I do it to myself. Facebook, Twitter, etc. can suck away all your time and concentration if you aren't careful. Sometimes I just have to silence my phone and put it away or I'd never finish a book.

7. Looking for new books- I think this one is kind of funny. I can kill an evening surfing for new books. And I wasn't as much this way before I started blogging. It is so relaxing to just scroll through Amazon, Net Galley, or the Goodreads shelves looking at all the books I have yet to read. But it keeps me from actually reading them. So weird. 

8. Falling asleep- This one is a real problem during the week. I will be excited to finally have a few minutes at the end of the day to read and the next thing I know, I'm out. Like a light. And the next day I have to start over because I literally can't remember anything I've read. So annoying!

9. Texting friends- While it probably belongs with number 6, this is actually its own category. I might be able to shut off apps but I have a hard time shutting off my friends. I feel the need to respond to everything and have to remember they'd want me to take me time. So I'm trying to ignore and just enjoy my book some days.

10. The gym- I am not one of those people that hates to workout. It's totally the opposite in fact. I love going to the gym. But let's face it, it is time consuming and I've never been someone who can read while on the elliptical bouncing up and down. I'm sweating, out of breath, and trying to follow a plot line....it doesn't work for me. I end up watching Brit Box mysteries and that's fun...but it doesn't get my book read!

Usually when I finish a top ten list I'm running out of books or ideas. Not so with this post! I have a million things that take up my blissful reading time. When I was single in my nice, quiet apartment with only a cat to care for, I'd spend whole Saturdays plowing through books. I still love to read just as much but my life takes over now. I'm trying to remember to enjoy it all because my boys will be leaving me in the next 3-5 years, I'll retire from teaching, and I'll have lots of time to read....but then I'll be lonely for all the crazy!! And hey, I could be reading right now....so I think I'll stop this list and get to it. 

 

Stacking the Shelves #1

 

Sometimes I just want to post about books I'm planning to read or have recently added to my shelves. Stacking the Shelves is perfect for that....it's a weekly meme hosted by Reading Reality. While I might not do it every week, it looks fun to do when I am wanting to share what my TBR pile is looking like. Happy Reading!

Book One in a new series.....combine Scotland, a cozy mystery, and a manor house and you make me happy! I recently posted for Can't Wait Wednesday about book two in this new series so I thought I'd start with the first one. Hoping I've found another Verity Bright-type of book. 

I'm currently watching this movie (it's four hours long so I'm viewing it in chunks!) and it's on my Classics Club list to read in the next five years. May as well get started, right? I love, love, love Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean so I'm hoping the movie doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the book if the images in my head aren't aligned. Also, born, raised, and lived in Texas all my life so we will see if I like how it portrays my home :) 

As spring arrives and we near summer vacation, I just go crazy for all things Caribbean. I have wanted to read this book for awhile and it was on sale at Book Bub so I bought it for my Kindle. After seeing the length (over 800 pages) and realizing not all the sections look interesting to me, I've decided to read the parts that I want to and just take my time with it. But that cover....can I move there please?

2022 Historical Fiction Reading Challenge Wrap-Up

Last January I joined this challenge with the intent of reading 25 historical fiction books. I also planned to leave a review for each book on Amazon or Goodreads. Then I saw the beautiful book blogs others had created and wanted to try it myself in order to leave my reviews all in one place. Nearly a year later here I am ending the challenge with my blog and it all started here! Thanks to Marg at The Intrepid Reader and Baker for hosting this challenge.

Below is my list of books I read in 2022. Reviews for each book can be found on my blog ShellieLovesBooks. My goal was 25 books and I read 27 (not counting other genres like history, etc.) so I'm pretty pleased with that. Something I noticed was the number of sequels and certain authors I gravitate to. While it is fun to read and review new books I find it hard to let go of characters I love. In the coming year I'm going to try to work on more classics and new books but it will be a challenge!

My Top 10 Favorite Series Books of 2022

 

Don't you just love books that are part of a series?  The idea that you have another waiting to read when you already love a book and all its characters so much is a comforting feeling. At least it is for us bibliophiles, although occasionally I hate the pressure I feel to finish them all. That's just never gonna happen!  I thought this week I'd list my top 10 favorite series books of 2022. I could probably do this post several times a year because I'm always starting new ones. What are your favorite series books?

1. Verity Bright's Eleanor Swift Mysteries

Wonderful cozy mystery series set in 1920's England. Eleanor, her beloved butler Clifford, and her trusty bulldog, Gladstone solve mysteries while charming everyone  in the quaint village of Chipstone. I have read the first three in this series and can't wait to read the next Christmas themed one soon. These just make you feel happy.

2. Anne Perry's Thomas Pitt Mysteries

Thomas and his wife Charlotte mingle with the upper class in their stately drawing rooms and  tackle the dark underworld of Victorian England in this gripping series. I am up to book 9 and am always eager to read the next one. Perry provides plenty of suspense, history, and authentic dialogue, making you feel like you've been transported to the 1800's. 

3. Anne Perry's William Monk Mysteries

William Monk and Nurse Hester Latterly risk danger and societal discord to unravel the clues to multiple murders in Victorian England. I have read the first 15 in this series and they are all amazing. I think I enjoy them even more than the Pitt series because they are even grittier and so authentic with the depiction of Victorian society.  She has stopped writing them for now to concentrate on her newer books but I hope she will continue with them someday. 

4. Sharon Kay Penman's Plantagenets

This series is a true historical fiction literary feat covering in great detail the lives of Empress Matilda and her heirs, Henry Plantagenet and his sons with Eleanor of Aquitaine. I have read the first three books and am looking forward to tackling the last two covering the life and crusades of Richard the Lionheart.

5. Ben Kane's Lionheart 

A totally different spin on Richard and the Crusades from the Penman books. Told through the eyes of a squire, turned knight of Richard the Lionheart, Ben Kane's series is amazing and he transports the reader to the time with great depictions of battles and political intrigue. Not as romantic as the Penman Plantagenet series or as detailed but a very entertaining read on its own. I have only read the first one and would like to read the next two in 2023.

6. Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody Mysteries

Set in the late 1800's these Victorian age mysteries add a level of clever, witty dialogue that takes them up a notch from your typical cozy mystery. Amelia Peabody is a lady of her age while also maintaining an independent spirit. The first one is set in Egypt and is so delightful. I can't wait to continue this series that adds interesting, exotic locations to a suspenseful whoodunit plot. 

7. Amanda Scott's Border Trilogy

Though billed as a romance author her stories have a layer of history and political intrigue that make them much more than the standard bodice ripper. I've learned a lot about Scotland and England during the middle ages and the border wars that caused frustration on both sides. She has penned a prolific number of these books which I don't think she gets enough credit for. There is wonderful research that goes into each one. 

8. Ellis Peters' Cadfael Chronicles Mysteries

Join everyone's favorite Monk, Brother Cadfael as he solves crimes in Shrewsbury. England during the years of the Anarchy. These are great for a quick read between longer books although they do pack a lot into each one so plan to concentrate. Clever, with a subtle, underlying humor, Peters keeps you guessing throughout and you will learn a bit about the politics of the day in 1100's England and Wales. 

9. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander

Be transported from the 1940's to the 1740's and become swept up in the Jacobite cause of Scotland. An amazing series, it will hook you and make you want to know these characters as if they were real people. I have read all the big books twice and am making my way through them a third time. They are so long and detailed you will always learn something new each time you re-read them.

10.Martha Keyes' Tales From the Highlands

Keyes puts a lot of solid research into these charming romance stories. They are also clean and wholesome although often tackle serious subjects. I have read the first one and have already bought the next two. She has another stand alone novel I've read as well set in Scotland.
